Why the timing matters after a storm
Insurance policies have a window to report storm damage, and hail bruising is easiest to document in the first few weeks before weather wears it in. An inspection now costs nothing and gives you dated photos either way.
Signature Roofing repairs wind damage for homeowners across the Kansas City Metro, from Riverside and Parkville to Independence and Overland Park. Strong wind gusts get under the leading edge of a shingle, break its seal, and either crease it or tear it off completely. This page walks through the signs of wind damage, what's causing it, and how repair or replacement gets decided once the roof has been inspected.

Did the last windstorm leave shingles missing or curled up along the edges of your roof?
Wind damage rarely announces itself with a hole. Instead it lifts a shingle's leading edge just enough to break the factory seal, and once that seal is gone the shingle either creases or tears off in the next gust. A creased shingle looks intact but will not reseal on its own, so it becomes a guaranteed leak point in the next hard rain. Missing shingles are the obvious version of the same problem; a walk of the roof and a look at the ridge cap usually tells us how far it's spread.
Warning signs to watch for
Missing or torn-off shingles
The most visible sign, usually along the roof edges or ridge where wind pressure is strongest.
Creased shingles that look intact
A crease breaks the shingle's internal seal even if it's still nailed in place, and it will not reseal on its own. It leaks the next time it rains hard.
Lifted shingle edges
Shingles that flap or stand up at the corners have lost their seal to wind uplift, even if they haven't torn away yet.
Damaged or missing ridge cap
The ridge takes the highest wind load on the roof, so ridge cap shingles are often the first to fail in a wind event.
What is causing the damage
Wind getting under the shingle's leading edge
Once wind lifts the bottom edge, it breaks the adhesive seal that holds the shingle flat, and the shingle stays vulnerable from then on.
Aging shingles with weakened seal strips
Older shingles lose their adhesive bond over time, which means they lift and crease in winds that a newer roof would shrug off.
Improperly sealed ridge caps
Ridge caps see the most direct wind pressure on the roof, and a poorly sealed or aging ridge is often where wind damage starts.
Debris impact during high wind
Branches and other debris carried by high wind can crease or knock loose shingles on top of the direct wind damage.
What to expect during the visit
We walk every slope of the roof and lift-test shingles along the edges and ridge, since that's where wind damage shows up first. We count and document every creased, torn, or missing shingle, along with the condition of the ridge cap, and photograph anything worth including in an insurance claim. From there we either repair the affected shingles directly or, if the seals have failed across a large section of the roof, recommend a broader replacement so the rest of the roof isn't one storm away from the same problem.
Related services you may need
If wind damage has spread across most of the roof, a full replacement is often more cost-effective than repeated repairs. And if the damage is significant enough to file a claim, our insurance claim assistance walks you through the process.
The cost of waiting
A creased shingle doesn't fix itself, and it doesn't stay a small problem. The next hard rain finds the broken seal, water gets under the shingle and into the decking, and what would've been a simple shingle swap turns into a decking repair. Missing shingles left exposed also expose the underlayment to sun and water in a way it wasn't built to handle long-term. The sooner wind damage gets repaired, the smaller the fix stays.
How do I know if my roof has wind damage?
Look for missing shingles, especially along the edges and ridge, or shingles that look creased or lifted at the corners. A ground-level look catches the obvious cases, but a roof walk is the only way to confirm creased shingles that still appear intact.
Can a few missing shingles turn into a bigger repair?
Yes, if it's left alone. Exposed underlayment doesn't hold up to sun and rain the way shingles do, and once water finds its way to the decking, a simple shingle replacement becomes a decking repair.
Does homeowners insurance cover wind damage repair?
Most policies cover wind damage, though the details depend on your specific coverage and deductible. A documented inspection is the first step in figuring out whether a claim makes sense, and we can help walk you through that process.
If a recent windstorm left shingles missing or lifted, give Signature Roofing a call for an inspection. We work with homeowners across the Kansas City Metro to get wind damage repaired before it becomes a bigger problem.
