How big is 1-inch hail?

About the size of a quarter. Hail that size can bruise asphalt shingles and dent gutters, downspouts and air-conditioner fins; this is the size the National Weather Service calls severe. Sizes are the National Weather Service's comparisons. What hail can do depends on the roof's age and material; it is a reason to look, not a finding.

What to do now

Wind like this doesn't always leave damage you can see from the driveway. A storm that drops trees and limbs can also lift shingles, crack vents, or loosen flashing without anyone noticing until the next rain. Here's what's worth doing this week if you're in one of these towns.

  1. 1

Walk the yard first. Look for broken limbs, debris on the roof, or anything that could have come down near the house during the storm.

  2. 2

From the ground, scan each roof slope for shingles that look lifted, torn, or missing, and check gutters and downspouts for a pile of granules.

  3. 3

Photograph anything that looks off, the roof, the gutters, soft metal vents, and any debris, before you clean it up.

  4. 4

If you see soft spots, a new stain on the ceiling, or anything you're not sure about, get a professional look rather than guessing.

  5. 5

Call or text Signature Roofing and you'll talk to the people who do the work, not a call center. We'll come out, inspect the roof, and tell you straight whether it needs a repair or a replacement.

  6. 6

If you plan to talk to your insurer, describe what you saw and ask what your policy covers. Signature Roofing offers a free inspection and can document what we find in writing.
